The demand for sheep was good, and with the exception of one small pen we effected a total clearance. Cattle were dull, and the bulk of the yarding went out unsold. PRODUCE CIRCULAR. The N.Z. Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., have received the following from their London Office, dated January 27: — Wool.—Since the date of our last report the market for merino has remained very firm, the finest grades, as the result of keen Continental competition, generally ruling rather dearer, scoured and lambs being in good demand at unchanged rates. . As regards crossbred, ordinary fine grades show no material alteration, but for medium and coarse sorts the advance established at the opening has not been fully maintained, the improvement as compared with the close of the sixth series being now usually not more than 5 per cent, a like remark applying also to slipe. In the bidding for America less keenness has been manifest, and in consequence for parcels taken for that quarter the prices realised arc rather below the high rates paid in November. The catalogues have been well cleared from day to day, of 102,757 bales offered to date only some N 4300 bales having been taken in under the hammer. Owing to fog no sale was held to-day. Sheepskins.—At tho auctions, held on 20th and 21st inst., there was a. good attendance and with excellent competition the offering of 5500 bales Australasian was practically cleared. Prices for merino were about on a par with those ruling at the preceding sales, December 15 and. 17, fine crossbred being mostly g d, and the coarse sorts 3d to id per lb dearer. The few lots of crossbred lambs marked an advance of id per lb, whilst pelts were unchanged. New Zealand Hemp.—Tho market has remained in a very quite state and little business has been passing, but prices are steady. There is little hemp near at hand and for this position there is a good enquiry. The market is very firm in the Dominion and few offers have been received here. We quote : —Good fair, spot £2S to £28 ss, January-March £27 to £27 ss; fair, spot £27 10s, Janu-ary-March £26 to £26 56; and fair current Manila £26' 10s to £27 per ton c.i.f. Tow is in good demand at £12 15s for No. 1 and £11 15s for No. 2 per ton c.i.f.

Cocksfoot.—The market is very quiet and will remain so until after the general election, when it is expected there will be more enquiry. Stocks are very small and prices remain firm. It is understood that there will be a good harvest in the Dominion, and that prices for new seed will be lower than last year. We quote:—l7lb seed on passage 72s per cwt c.i.f., new seed about 56s per cwt c.i.f.

Grain.—A period of quietness has characterised the wheat market for some time, but at the close there is a steadier feeling and prices rule about on a par with late rates. In Australian for arrival 40e 6d net per 4801bs c.i.f. has been paid for a sailer cargo of New South Wales January bill of lading and 40s 9d per 4801bs c.i.f. has been accepted for a cargo of South Australian DecemberJanuary shipment, but there is an easier feeling at the close. The oat market is quiet, owing to heavy shipments and prices have declined about Is per quarter. We quote:—A Gartons about 19s per 3201bs c.i.f. March-April shipment. Beans and peas nominally unchanged. In Tasmanian Maple peas late rates are well maintained, owing to scarcity. A parcel has been sold at 45s 6d per 5041bs c.i.f., but buyers are now offering 6d to 9d le6s. We quote:—Australian wheat, 43s 6d to 44s per 4961b5; New Zealand, longberried 41s 6d to 425, shortberried 41s to 41s 6d; barley, 25s to 28s per 4481b5; oats, Sparrowbills 22s to 24s per 3841b5, Danish 17s to 18s per 3201b5; beans f.a.q., 40s to 41s per 5041b5; Tasmanian Maple peas, No. 1 quality 56s to 60s, No. 2 52s to 545, No. 3 48s to 50s; Australian flour 30s to 31s per 2801bs. Tallow.—There have been four public auctions during the period under review. The firmness mentioned in our last report was maintained for about a fortnight, and then with a falling-off in the demand prices declined about 6d per cwt. At the close, with a better enquiry, this weakness has been recovered, and rates rule on a par with those last quoted. In Australasian for arrival prices fell Is per cwt, the decline being most noticeable in the case of near at hand parcels, but values have now recovered to the extent of 9d per cwt for distant positions and 6d per cwt for near. We quote: —Good cdour mixed 33s 3d per cwt c.i.f., finest mutton 37s to 38s, fair to good 34s to 35s 6d, edible beef 36s to 375, and fair to good 33s 6d to 35s per cwt ex warehouse.

Frozen Meat. —Stocks of New Zealand mutton at the present time are in moderate compass, but notwithstanding this, owing to the unsatisfactory demand recently experienced, holders have found it necessary to accept less money. There has been a good demand for Australian lamb, and there is no doubt that butchers have been using the heavy-weight carcases in place of mutton. A few small lines of new season North Island have of late been offering, but the quality has been somewhat irregular. The demand, however, is still very limited. For the most part chilled beef has been in plentiful supply, but this week, with smaller quantities available, prices havo ruled firmer. A quiet trade has been passing in frozen descriptions at slightly higher rates. .We quote:—Canterbury mutton 3gd to 4ad (nominal). North Island 3gd to 3|d, Australian 3£d to 3gch ewes 3-Jd, Dutch 5d to s£d; Canterburv lamb 5-Jd 1o 'sid. North Island 4id to"sid, Australian to*4&d, Dutch sjd to 6d per lb off the hooks at Smithfield; New* Zealand beef, hides 3d to 3£d, fores 2i?d to 2gd. Australian hind? 3d to 3£d, fores 2|d to 2gd, River Plate frozen beef hinds 3d to 3|d, fores to 2Zd. River Plate chilled beef hinds 4£d to s{d, feres 3fd to 3^l.
