CHRISTCHURCH, March 15. A number of orchardists were fined £1 and costs to-day for failing to keep codlin moth in check. The Magi6trate commented adversely on the action of the Department in prosecuting a few people and causing expense and irritation when the authorities had the power to order the treatment of the trees at the expense of the owners. He said the moth was not to be stamped out by prosecutions. The Inspector said the' prosecutions were intended to let people know that the Act had to be observed.

WANGANUI, March 15.

At tho Supreme Court to-day Arthur Campbell, who pleaded guilty to theft of sheep skins, was sentenced to _ 18 months. Harry Wildman was admitted to probation for 12 mouths for stealing a cheque. Leonard Lotter was sentenced to two years for forging and uttering.. Robert Harris got two yeare for criminal assault.
