THE ALLEGED RAGGING CASE.
MEN DENY THE CHARGE. WANGANUI, March 11. The young man Annabell, who was severely burned about the face and hands at Taihape on Tuesday morning, is making satisfactory progress towards recovery, though it will be probably some weeks before he will be able to leave the institution. His statement that "waste" was thrown over him and ignited by some of the men who were working with him in the engine shed, as a practical joke, is contradicted by the men, who all deny having anything to do with the affair. It is said that Annabell lay down on an engine tender, resting his head on some cotton waste and partly covering his head with his folded arms. He was shortly afterwards awakened by flames on his face and arms. It is considered possible that as Annabell carried a slush lamp on his cap when he fell asleep, the lamp may have fallen, and ignited the oily cotton waste. A full investigation was to have been held on Wednesday night at Taihape by the railway authorities, but so far; the .conclusions arrived at have not been made public.
