Dr. Porritt, of Wanganui, is steadily recovering from his recent accident caused by his motor colliding with a tru>n. Mr Sydney Wolfe, adjudicator at the Wanganui Brass Band Contest, accompanied by Mrs Wolfe, through Palmerston to-day en route to Wanganui. Sergeant Bernard, who has been in charge .of the Hawera police district for nearly 11 years, will retire from the force under the age limit at the end of March. A gold watch and chain offered for competition among primary school children by Lieutenant-Colonel Allan Bell, of Wai'kato, for an essay on "Patriotism," was won by Miss Ida L. Ross, of the Waimatuku School, Southland. The competition was open to boys and girls under 16 years of age.

Mr I. J. Fake had the misfortune to meet with an accident while at work this week. He missed his footing and fell over an obstacle with such force that a rib was broken and severe bruises sustained about the body. He will be confined to the house for some days, but in the meantime i 6 progressing satisfactorily. The Rev. A. T. Thomson, 8.A., 8.D., was married on Wednesday at Knox , Church. Masterton, to Miss Robina Isabella Cameron, eldest daughter of Mr . D. J. Cameron, of "Sherwood," Masterton. The honeymoon will be spent at Rotorua, and from thence the Rev. and Mrs Thomson will .proceed to Auckland, to embark by tho s.s. Mongolia for England, where they remain for several months. A wedding was also celebrated at "Westmeath," Upper Plain, Masterton, on Wednesday, when Mr Leslie McLachlan, second son of Mr Duncan McLachlan, of "Turohonga," Opaki, was married to Miss Eva Chamberlain, fourth daughter of Mr G. E. Chamberlain. Mr Louis Cohen, of Wanganui, who has decided to tako an extended Euro pean tour, will leave Auckland by the Mongolia on Wednesday next and will travel to England via the Suez Canal. Mr Cohen will travel in England, Ireland and Scotland, and later on in leisurely manner on the Continent. Mr Cohen "is the present sitting member of the University Senate of New Zealand, President of tho Defence League, and is also interested in many other matters, but there is one, scheme which has been his hobby for many years past, the establishment of a Conservatorium of Music in connection, with the University of New Zealand. With the object of perhaps obtaining his hopes in this direction Mr Cohen will interview Mr Carnegie and endeavour to interest him the project. The return journey'will be made through America,- Mr Cohen having received a special invitatioti from Prof. Starr-Jordon, of the LeilandStanford University. The New Zealander will also have the opportunity of renewing his friendship with distinguished New Zealanders abroad, including Prof. Rutherford, a contemporary at the University, Prof. McLaurin; Prof. Connell, Dean of Classics ait Leeds University, a fell student from Canterbury. By special arrangement an opportunity will be afforded Mr Cohen of travelling to Oberammergau. where the passion play is produced, in company with Mr Charles Harris. Mr Cohen is going Home well provided with letters to men of note in the world of letters and music in England, the Continent, and America He has arranged to write a series of reviews and impressions of art and music in the several countries through which he will travel, and the publication of these should form highly instructive as well as valuable reading.
