SPORTING.

FEILDING RACES

SECOND DAY.

Climatic conditions were again very favourable yesterday when the Feilding Jockey Club concluded its summer meeting, the easterly wind that was blowing in no way interfering either with the attendance or the enjoyment of the racing. Speculation during the day was fairly brisk, a total of £8628 being handled, making a total of £17,143 for the meeting, ae against £16,983 last year, an increase- of £160. Twenty-two bookmakers were licensed yesterday. The racing all through was most interesting, the only absolutely easy win being that of Master Paul m the Hack Hurdles, the Aucklander beating his field pointless. The finish in the Cheltenham Hurdles, on the contrary, was the best seen at the meeting, Feu de Joie and Reumac leaving their field lengths behind, and contesting every inch of the way from the half-mile to the post, where Feu de Joie won by half a head. Merrivonia's win in the Manchester Handicap was somewhat of a surprise, but the filly found a lot of support on account of her forward running in the New Zealand Cup, in which she led the field for a' considerable distance. The meeting was well managed, and generally was most successful and enjoyable. A field of eight went out in the York Stakes, Longncr being the only withdrawal. Ny'land got all the best of the start, hopping out at the barrier with a big break on anything else, whilst Golden Eagle and Bliss were left several lengths to the bad. Bliss made up lost around and finished in the ruck, but Golden Eagle was last all the way. The field closed up a bit on Nyland in the run from the home turn, but had no hope of catching him, and the big son of Fjnland passed the post a good two lengths ahead oE Sir. Antrim, who was just ahead of Sharpshooter, after whom came Irish Rifle, Miss Winnie, and NicoGolden Loop was the only withdrawal in the Nikau Handicap, in which Magneto was made favourite and the Foxtonowned and trained Waiouru second in demand. Shannon Lass was first out of the barrier, but she was soon joined by Thotis, and the pair showed the way to . the four furlong post, where Waiouru took charge. At the home turn he looked like winning, but failed to withstand a challenge thrown out by Magneto and Rangikura, who each passed him, as did also Shannon Lass. In the run to the post Magneto prevailed by half a head from Rangikura, with Shannon Laes half a length away. Dervish and Singer were next with a. head between them. A field of eight went out in the Manchester Handicap, Equitas and Capt. Bell being the absentees. The field was despatched on excellent terms, and passing the stand the order was Kilwinning and Waipaku, with Truganini, Merrivonia and Roosevelt close up. At the top turn Kilwinning and Waipaku were racing on terms, and a- length behind them were. Merrivonia and Truganini also neck and neck. At the five furlong post the latter went up to the leaders, and rounding the far turn appeare3 to hold a winning chance. She failed to sustain her run. however, when heads were turned for home and dropped back beaten, whilst Merrivonia and Roosevelt closed up on the leaders. At the half distance the Merriweo filly was in front, and galloping strongly she passed the post a length and a half to the good from Kilwinning, who was just in front of the consistent but unlucky Roosevelt. Following the top-weight came Paieano, Truganini and Waipaku, with Mendip last.

All the acceptors, seven, went out in the Cheltenham Hurdles, Stayboy being installed a hot favourite. Tyrannic led for a mile, and then gave place to Stayboy, who, however, was passed by Reumac and Feu de Joie, and the two latter left their field. Both were under punishment to the post, where Feu dc Joie was a head to the good. Whimper was third, several lengths away.

There were six starters in the Rongotea Hack Hurdles, Stayboy, who* had started in the previous race, being the absentee. Master Paul got away with a break, and leading his field by 6ix or seven lengths all the way, won in a canter from Pearl Reef, who beat Genuine on the post for second place. Don Carlos was fourth.

The public rushed Bismark in the Welter Hack Flat, quite neglecting everything else in his favour. Reumac was the only withdrawal, and the fourteen startere were got away on fairly even terms. Teotane showed the way to the five furlong poet, where Midian went to the front and led along the top turn and to the home bend, where Teotane was on terms with her again. Half-way down the straight Parable put in her claim and passed the post a clear length to the good from Teotane, who was a neck in front of Astraea, with Bismark close up fourth. After him came Rangikapua, Midian and Silva, with Envoy last.

Seventeen horses faced the starter in the Maiden Scurry. Melalogue was prominent, for three furlongs, but at the home turn gave way to the placed horses, Amphianser, a stable mate of Aberbrothock, winning comfortably by a length from Nukuhau. Mise Slyvia was left at the poet and returned to the paddock. The withdrawal of Paisano, San Fernando, Capt. Bell and Notorious left a field of ten in the final event of the meeting, the Railway Welter. Perolina carried the bulk of the- totalisator investments, with Full Sail ranking as second in demand. Cyrene and Longner were the first to get going when the tapes were released, but with a furlong gone VI took charge, and she was not again headed, winning easily by a length from Full Sail, who put in a long run from the homo turn.
