Any of the above not able to make the trip will kindly advise the. secretary as soon as possible. A special meeting of the Dannevirke Lawn Tennis Club was held on Friday night for the purpose of receiving from Mr and Mrs W. H. Hartgill the handsome solid silver challenge cups and mugs which they donated to the club for competition. The cups are to be competed' for annually by those playing in the ladies' and gentlemen's champion singles, but the silver mugs, which have been donated to accompany the cups have been won outright this year. The cups, says the Advocate, are mounted on a solid ebony base, and the names of the winners will b© each year engraved on the silver shields which ornament the pedestals. The cup and mug, which have been allotted to the men's championship singles, were given by Mr Hartgill, and those for tho ladies' champions Kip singles by Mrs Hartgill, who has had the satisfaction of seeing her daughter become the first winner of the trophies. Although the cupe can never become the absolute property of the winner, it is proposed that in. future years the successful competitor will, be presented-. with: .a mug similar to those given this year, which will be provided. either by the club, or by private donors. The trophies were handed over the club by Mr Hartgill in a few graceful words. , and were as gracefully received on behalf of the club by "Mr Bickford. the president. A cordial vote of thanks was also p»esed to Mrs Rathbon© for the donation of- a handsome pair of silver-backed military brushes, for the men's 'handicap singles, and a chaste silver-backed hand mirror for the ladies' handicap einglee.
