THOSE DAIRY REGULATIONS.

During the recent election contest we mentioned that the dairy regulations, which were so strongly objected to by the men engaged' in the industry, were never submited to Mr Gilruth, then Government Veterinarian, for an opinion, and that they were foisted upon farmers without full consideration as to their utility. This statement was ridiculed by people who knew nothing about the matter, and under the circumstances it was not deemed necessary to waste any time in replying to them. Recent disclosures, however, prove that we were correct in our assertion. Before leaving New Zealand this week Mr Gilruth threw some light on the question of the dairy regulations, stating that ,he had not been consulted regarding them, and he gave some sound advice as to the manner in which the work of inspection should be carried out. The Government undoubtedly blundered when they ignored Mr Gilruth in this matter, for h.ad they< sought his advice they would have avoided disappointment and embarrassment. The lesson was undoubtedly severe, but it was useful inasmuch as it ought to be a good guide for future. terial action where the interests of the farmers are concerned.
