'. . s i The death occurred on' Saturday, at /Napier, in her tixty-fourth year of Mrs iAnnie Spencer, relict of the late Dr. W. p fT. Spencer, who was surgeon to the 18th .Royal Irish regiment. i ,i Mr S. J. Carman, chairman of the 5 Kiwitea County Council, who has been in indifferent health for some time past, L has decided not to seek re-election to the i Council. The members, at Saturday's ■ meeting, expressed their regret, and recorded their appreciation of the value of Mr Carman's services. The interment of the late Mr Joseph James Birchley took place on Saturday afternoon. The cortege was a large one, 1 friends from "all parts of the district having gathered to pay their last re..spects to deceased. The body was first taken to St. Peter's. Church, Terrace End, where the Rev. C. C. Harper conducted a short service, and thence to the cemetery, where an impressive I burial service was also conducted by the J vicar. Mr W. M. Jacks, who has represented Messrs Abbott, Oram and Co. in Hawke's Bay for many years, was entertained on Friday evening by about 30 gentlemen connected with various busnness interests in Napier. Mr Jacks has been promoted to the managership of his firm's Christchurch branch, and the gathering was held for the purpose of bidding him a, cordial good-bye and wishing him every future prosperity. Mr Jacks was presented with a silver-mounted oak liqueur stand. At Parliament Buildings the staff of the House, -the sessional messengers, and orderlies, waited upon the Speaker, Hon. A. R. Guinness, and expressed their thanks for his kindly interest in their welfare. The spokesman, Mr F. Davis, . handed Mr Guinness two umbrellas—a gold-mounted one for himself and a j silver-mounted one for Mrs Guinness. In thanking the staff for their kind thoughts and valuable mementoes, Mr Guinness mentioned that Mr Davis, who is a messenger, took up his duties on the day the late Premier, Mr Seddon, entered the Legislature in 1879. Dr. Coughtry, the well-known Dunedin medical practitioner, died on Saturday after an illness extending over nine days. Deceased graduated at Edinburgh University with honours and came to Dunedin in 1875 to fill the position of Professor of Anatomy at the Otago Univer- i sity. _ He was previously demonstrator < at Liverpool University. After filling the position of Professor of Anatomy i at Dunedm for some years he went into ] private practice. Deceased held the iCom- ( mission of SuregowMajor in the Defence Forces and was local secretary of the Royal Humane Society for some years. He served as a volunteer civil surgeon in the Franco-German war. During his residence at Dunedin he took a keen interest in local affairs and was a member of the Drainage Board, and President of the Otago Rugby Union from 1887 till 1890.
