A London cable announces the death of Lady Tozer, wife of the Agent-Gene-ral for Queensland. Sir Joseph Ward leaves Auckland for Wellington on Saturday.—Early next month he will tour Central Otago.

Messrs Dugald McPherson .and C. S. Owen will represent the Dominion -it the Commercial Travelers' Association Conference at Brisbane at Easter.

Sir James and Lady Mills leave ly the Maheno on Monday for Melbourne, where they intend to remain about six weeks. Lady Mills goes Home in May.

Miss Elizabeth H. B. MacdonaM, M A., M.D., Ch.B., a young lady from Dundee, is on her way out to Wellington to take up professional work m that. city. At Feilding yesterday Mr A. R. Humphries, of Makino. was married to Miss Bertha M. WaldeP. Mr D. Reid, of Makino, was best man, and Miss E. Walden bridesmaid.

Mr C. H. Whale, of Greatford, was yesterday married to -Miss Margaret Thow, second daughter of Mr G. Thow, Feilding. We are pleased to learn that Mr J. T. Lang, who has been ill for the past week, is now well on the way to oonvalesccnce again, and will bo about in the course of a few days. Mr F. File, son of the well-known Rotnney Marsh sheep breeder at Home, who has been spending-an extended holiday in New Zealand with Mr E. Short, Feilding. left Feilding on his return journey yesterday. Ihe death is announced of Mr W. G. Scoftcr. an old resident of Gisborno, father of the-Rev. A. Scotter.. He arrived in Auckland in 1856, and went to Gisborne in 1878. He served in vhe Maori war, and afterwards took an active interest in the volunteers.

VVhelch, who won the amateur sculling championship race at the Napier Carnival last week, was a passenger by tho afternoon express yesterday to Wellington, on his way to Akaroa. where, he resides. Whelch had an easy victory defeating the Wanganui representative, Green, by over 20 lengths. The telegraph and telephone linemen attached to the Palmorston office have presented Mr J. Louisson, chief clerk at the' telephone exchange, with a handsome afternoon tea service and occasional table, taking this means of expressing their regard for him on the occasion of his marriage, Mr Louisson suitably thanked his fellow employees for their kindness, which he much appreciated.

The Arawa, leaving Wellington tomorrow, will take a strong contingent of district settlers to the Old Country. Iα addition to those already enumerated, Mr and Mrs Geo. Day and Air Gibson (Colyton), Mr and Mrs Tong (Feilding). and Mr, Mrs and Miss Pleasants of Burnside, Halcombe will also sail Mr. and Mrs J. Cornfoot and daughter leave for England m a few weeks.

The death is announced of Mr James Mitchell, one of the early settlers of Wellington, which occurred yesterday morning. The deceased arrived from the Old Country with his parents in the ship Gertrude sixty-seven years ago. He and his two brothers (Mr Henry Mitchell, who is still living in Wellington, and Mr Wm. Mitchell, who. died six vears ago. aged 83) settled m Polbril Gullv, and for many years carried on business there as contractors and brickmakers. The suburb of Mitchelltown was named after them. Retiring from the firm, Mr James Mitchell took up i farm at, Tawa Flat, but soon returned to town, and for a number of years he carried on business as a carrier, retiring about ten years ago. He had been ali,.cr for some time before his death, but his condition became serious when he was attacked by bronchitis. during the recent cold snap. He was in his 86th voar. For fifty-four years ho had been , member of the Primitive Method..* Church, and was one of those who laid the foundation stone of the new chapel n Donald McLean Street, Wellington The deceased has left a family of four sonri and three daughters, Two of hesona are in Oamaru, another is m Wellington and another in Ashburton.
