Mr B. R. Gardner, Mayor of Levin, was a visitor to Palmerston to-day.
The retirement of Mr Greenwood, official assignee at Christchurch. and Mr Graham, who holds a similar position in Duhcdin, will shortly take place. Mr Thomas Rimmer left Foxton yesterdav for Wellington, on route to England." Mr and Mrs Rimmer and four members of the family leave by the Aravva on Thursday. The Rev. J. Cocker, who has been appointed as .the New Zealand delegate to tb v e Primitive Methodist Centenary Conference. to be held shortly in London, will leave for England by to-morrow's boat. The centenary of Primitive Methodism is being marked by three separate conferences. The great openair meeting, held last- year on Mow Cop, commemorated the first camp meetings held bv the denomination. The conference which Mr Cocker is attending will mark another feature of the Church's origin, and a final centenary conference will be held in 1910 to commemorate the formation of the first Primitive Methodist classes. This year's conference will be held in the City Road Church. London. the first church of Methodism, which has been specially lent for the occasion. The Earl of Dudley, the new Gover-nor-General of Australia, was LordLieutenant of Ireland from 1902 to 1905, and was very popular. When ho went to Dublin at the ago of 36, it was with an exceptional amount of all-round experience. He had toured round the world and studied the colonies at close quarters; served in the Yeomanry Cavalry (1899-1900); been Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Trade, and paid keen personal attention to the development of his iron mines, collieries, and iron works. Lady Dudley, who brilliantly aided him in winning Irish hearts, is a daughter of Mr Charles Gurnev, who was compelled by misfortune to retire from his family's famous bank. His daughters for a time served iu a milliner's establishment, but Miss Rachel Gurnoy had become the adopted daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Bedford, when Lord Dudley won her.
