MUTUAL IMPROVEMENT SOCIETY.
A meeting was held last evening in an ante-room of the Cuba Street Methodist Church to form a Mutual Improvement Society, when there was a fair attendance, the meeting being presided over by the Rev. H. Beggs. In opening the proceedings the chairman explained that the Society was being established for tho winter evenings to provide entertainment of a high and instructive character for the members, young men and women being especially catered for. Debates and papers upon various subjects would form the programme of the society, interspersed with musical evenings. The previous meeting had decided that a society should be formed and he asked for a motion to that effect.
It was decided to form a society to be named the Cuba Street Methodist Mutual Improvement Society, candidates for membership to be' over J 6 years of age; the membership fee to be Is per session, from April to September, meetings to be held on alternate Thursdays. A list of rules was drawn up and duly adopted. The following officers were elected—President, Rev. H. Beggs; vicepresidents, Messrs J. T. Burrell and Pallant; secretary, Mr S. Edwards; treasurer, Mr Johansen; editor, Mr Cox j and committee composed of tho president, secretary, treasurer, editor Misses M- A. Jamieson and Bur- j rell, and Messrs ParKinsoil Jt'iid Gl'eig. The society will open on April Ist with an address by Mr Burrell on his trip to the Old Country. The evenings will he open to the public, who are especially invited to attend the opening address.
