CORRESPONDENCE.

THE RAILWAY REGULATIONS. (To the Editor.) Sir, —I wish to bring under your notice a matter affecting the issue of railway tickets. On February 21st I purchased a single ticket at Turakina for Palmerston. and on that, day travelled to Marton, a distanco of eleven miles. From Marton to Palmerston I journeyed by other means than the train, so had my ticket good for that distance. Yesterday I was in Fordell, took a new tickct from there to Marton. and wished to travel on my unused ticket from Marton to Palmerston. But the railway official on the train informed mc that this could not bo done, as a passenger must travel 25 miles with a single ticket before he breaks his journey if he wishes to use the remaining portion. Thereupon he charged mo 3s Id for a new ticket, which was paid under protest. On arriving at Palmerston I called on the stationmaster, and to my surprise he informed me that one could not break a journey under 20 miles, and that by using my tickct between Turakina and Marton I had broken the contract entered into when purchasing the ticket, which was now void. Now, sir, the regulation clearly says that " passengers holding single or return tickets for distances over 10 miles may break the journey at any station at" which the train is timed to stop after travelling 10 miles from the original starting station." I would further like to know why I waa charged 3s Id, when the fare is 2s 6d, plus 6d fine for riding without a ticket. It seoms to me that some of the railway officials would be the better for a little study of their own regulations.—Yours, etc.. A. HAMPTON. Church Street..
