SOUTHLAND NEWS.
Per Press Association. INVERCARGILL, March 19. A boy was arrested for having placed an obstruction in the shape of pieces of railway iron on the line. The passenger train from Gore to Kingston stopped yesterday about, a mile below Garston, after having run over a portion of the obstruction. Tho Southland Times' correspondent reports that a painful sensation was caused ajt Lumsdon by the finding of Mrs Garthwaite, of Holmsdale, unconscious and almost uude, about a quarter of a mile above the Mararoa bridge. The body was rigid and she had to be brought in in a railway trolly. Dr. Mcllroy. who attended her, was himself taken seriously ill. Dr. Watt arrived from ttiverton, but could not restore animation, and she died about 7 o'clock next morning. Some of deceased's clothes were found in a patch of willows, and there are indications that she had partially undressed and then crawled to where she was found.
