Constable Martin, who has been stationed at Clyde Qtin.v, Wellington, has been transferred to Rongotea. The annual meeting of the Palm- i erston Licensed Victuallers' Asso- j ciatioa was hold this morning at the | Royal Hotel, when the following officers were elected for the ensuing year : —President, Mr W. Devine ; vice-president, Mr J. Boll: treasurer, Mr Bell; committee, Messrs McDonald, Mulrooney, Childs, Searle, Grau and Anderson. The report and balance sheet were received and adopted, and routine business transacted. Votes of thanks were accorded the executive for their services during the past year. Regret will be felt at the intimation that Mr Joseph James Bircliley, eldest son of Mr and Mrs Birchley, of Terrace End, died on Saturday evening at his father's residence. Deceased was only 29 years old. At the ago of 19 ho entered the Government service in the railway workshops at Aramoho, and was there up till quite recently, when he contracted an illness which caused his death. He was of a very quiet disposition, beloved and will be missed by a large circle of friends. His fellow workmen particularly will bo very sorry to hear of his early demise. His parents are old and highly respected residents of the district. The funeral will take place to-morrow afternoon at Terrace End. At a meeting of the Palmerston North Fire Police on Friday night, it was decided to celebrate the anniversary of the corps by holding a smoke concert and social reunion on Friday next. It was also decided to hold a progressive euchre tournament in connection with the gathering, the prizes for which have been presented by partrons of the corps. The officers and members oi 5 the Fire Brigade have been invited to the gathering, also a large number of private citizens. The committee have made arrangements for a first-class musical programme and guests are promised a very enjoyable evening.
