A STRANGE CASE.

UNKNOWN WOMAN DIES

On the 23rd ,May a woman who was supposed to have come from Masterton went to the house of Mrs Thompson, at 69, Tory Street, Wellington, and asked to be allowed to stay for the night. Although the woman was qhite a stranger, Mrs Thompson acceded' to her request, and she had stayed'in the house ever since. Yesterday morning at half-past one she was found in the kitchen of the house coughing frequently, but otherwise apparently in her usual state of health. Later in the day, however, about 10.20 a.m., she was found dead in her bed. The police were called, and Dr Shand also attended. There was nothing to indicate that death was due to any but natural causes. Mrs Thompson stated that she did not know the woman's name, but she believed she had been a cook employed on a station near Masterton. The only clue found was half of a railway ticket available between Masterton and Wellington- There was a bottle of cough mixture among the effects of the deceased. The body has been taken to the morgue, where it awaits identification. Deceased was apparently a woman of about fifty or fiftyfive years of age, sft 2in m height, slimly built, with round features, a turned-up nose, and dark hair. The police would be glad to receive any information that might lead to identification of the body.—N.Z. Times.
