,By Electric Telegrapf>—Copyright.) Per Press Association MELBOURNE, June 9. Evidently robbery was the motive for the murder of Mr Bauer, the diamond ; merchant. He was in the habit qf carrying a bag containing thousands of pounds' worth of precious stones and pearls, and depositing it in the bank over night. This bag is missing, and it is stated that it contained gems worth two or three thousand pounds. There are indications that he wp.s struck down when weighing diamonds on scales on the office table. His hat was pierced where the fatal blows were struck. Bauer was a partner in the firm of Bauer, Shaumer and Bauer, importers and dealers in precious stones doing a very large business throughout Australia, with their own pearling fleet at Broome.
