AUCKLAND, May 30. Yesterday afternoon a girl,' carrying a baby, entered a large shop in Auckland where a number of men are employed, and placing the infant on a bench alongside a youth who, it is stated, repudiated lul alleged responsibility, remarked that she had kept the child a certain time, and it was up to him to take a turn. She then left the shop and the youth, amid the chaffing of his fellow employees, took the baby to the police station, and the girl being sent for she was induced again to take charge of the infant and to have resort to a legal remedy.

WANGANCA, June 1. At the Supreme Court on Saturday, Oliphant Hughes was sentenced to eighteen months' imprisonment for perjury.

WELLINGTON, June 1. There was a large gathering of military forces and the general public at Buckle Street, on Saturday afternoon, when His Excellency the Governor laid the foundation stone of the new Garrison Hall to take the place of the one near Lambton Quay, built thirty years ago. In the course of his speech Lord Plunket said one of the great difficulties the Council of Defence had to face was the short time volunteers could get away from their regular employment for training. They could not train men effectively by night drills and on holidays. The men wanted several days together. He hoped employers would make sacrifices as the men were doing in order that the latter might do the duty they desired to perform.
