THE FIRE ON THE APARIMA.

Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, This 2;ay. _ On tho arrival of the steamer Apa-r.-uin _ i ;'L)ia biugapore this morning, details were obtained of the iire on the vessel, briefly reported by cable. The lire occurred in the lower No. 2 hold. Tho third officer saw :n: ;kc issuing from the ventilator at 9.00 a.m. on April 12th. The- crew r.as mustered, and assisted by the water biigade and three tugs, the hold was flooded .simultaneously with the cargo being discharged. By 1 p.m. the firo was well under control, and by 3 p.m. it was apparently completely extinguished. The crew continued discharging the cargo all day. The fire again started at 9 o'clock next morning, but was completely extinguished. The whole of the cargo in the hold was discharged on the wharf at Singapore and surveyed. About 500 tons was damaged and was left behind. The remainder was reshipped. The cargo- consisted of bone meal and gunny bags.. No official estimate of the damage is obtainable, but it is stated at about £7000. A general average will be struck.. The cargo was mostly for Auckland.
