THE MARKETS. Messrs E. Griffiths and Co., arc in receipt of tho following market report from their London principals Messrs Mills ami Sparrow, dated Hth December: — Butter.—The better tone and tool in"- reported m our last continues, goods, are firmer. One house m the street, having .speculated in butter and cheese at high figures, has "gone under," and the estate is likely to bo a very poor one. Danish Xn consequence of the impioved demand quotations have been advanced two kroncrs, and butters are clearing at the high figures. French 2^ o change; a small trade passing, manv buvers now giving their attention to colonial for preference. Australian— Anything which can be classed as "finest'' ex s.s. Britannia sold on landing at full rates, and there is a scarcity of finest at the present, moment. It is now certain that we. shall have a good market ritrht through to Christmas, but opinions -.re divided as to the course of the market after the New Year, and there is certain to be a biK fight on the part of buyers for lew or prices. The only thing in favour of the market is the scarcity of choice goods, but the quantity to arrive is fairly heavy. New Zealand.—The quantity of Tongariro shipment shows a great improvement over previous arrivals, and the butters generally have pleased. Prices are practically two shillings per cwt. over the Kumara, and finest well cleared. lhe few milled are not selling and hang lire. Russian and Siberian.—Arrivals very small; prices for stored goods nominal. Cheese. —Slightly firmer market, and most, of the earlier and fullflavoured goods are cleared. lhe turn in price is in holders' favour. Quotations. • — Butter. Danish : H9s to 1225. French 114s to libs, Russian and Siberian, 100s to 102s, excep. 104s; good to nne 945, 965; inferior 84s, 80s, 88s. torian: Finest salted and unsalted 108s to 110s: good to fine salted 100s, 102s, 104s, 106s. New South Wales: Finest salted 100s, IOSs, 110s, unsalted 106s to 108s; good to flue 965, 100s, 102s. Queensland: Finest salted 104s to 100s, finest unsalted 104s to 106s, fine salted 100s to 102s, inferior 90s to 90s. Zealand: Finest salted 110s, 112s, except. 114s; good to fine 104s to 106s. Argentine: Salted 108s_ to 110s. American: Salted nominal. Cheese.— Canadian : Autumn make, white and coloured 62s to 635; JuneJuly make, white and coloured 60s; New Zealand 60s. New Plymouth, 23rd January, 1907. THE STOCK MARKET. Messrs Abraham and Williams, Ltd., report on their Johnsonville sale as follows: —A fair entry ol bullocks. The quality ranged from prime to medium light. Sheep.— The market was fairly keen. Beet made up to 21s, best bullocks £8 to £8 17s 6d, others £7 17s 6d, light £6 17s 6d, heifers £5 ss. A fair yarding of sheep, including some extra good wethers. The ewes were pretty rough. Medium quality cues made' 13s 9d to 14s Id, wethers 17s to 17s 7d, lambs (woolly) 13s 3d, others 10s Gd to Us 9d, shorn 12s lid, others lis to 12s, light 10s We held our annual sale of showstock. The yards were all full and bidding was' brisk throughout- tho sale. The quality was not too good, but we sold every lot under the hammer. We quote: Two-tooth wethers 13s 9d to 14s 7d, full-mouth-ed ewes 7s 3d to 12s 9d, culls 4s to 6s 6d, 2-tooth to fresh full-mouth 14s, shorn rape lambs 8s 6d to 8s 9d, culls os, woolly lambs 10s 2d. A good yarding of rams were offered and we sold a line of 20 2-tooths on account of Mr T. Bould at 2-i- to 3ij guineas. We also offered a line of stud 2-tooth ewes, and a line of stud ram lambs, which were passed out, and wa can offer them privately.
