The youngest of the new Legislative Councillors is Mr J. T. Paul, who was born in Victoria in 1874, 33 years ago. Miss Nora .Stanton B'iaieh. the first woman member of the American Institute of Civil Engineers, has been appointed a member of the outdoor stall ol the new £32.000,000 water system for New York. A contemporary states that Mr C. G. Beckett is establishing a paper at Whakitane. At present he owns the. Northern Wairoa Times, the Whangarei Morning Press, and the Waihi Times.

It is stated that Mr Alex. McNab, of Cla.ehbraec, Southland, brother of the Minister for Lands, intends to contest the Wakatipu seat with the sitting member, Mr Wm. Eraser, M.H.R., at the next general election.

The death is announced of Mr John Donovan, who died at his residence, Kakarainea, on Monday evening. The deceased, who was a sergeant in the police force, and for a long time was stationed in the Patea district, had previously been stationed in the Wanganui district. About five years ago he retired from the service, and took up his residence at Kakaramea.

Master Irwin Eric Faris, son of Mr Faris, audit inspector of the Railways Department, has passed the medical preliminary examination of the New Zealand University, which includes the matriculation and solicitors' general knowledge examination. As he is only a few months over 15 years of age, this must surely be a record for the colony. He is a New Plymouth boy, having been born there.

Mr Andrew Carnegie is now within a year of his three-score and ten. His income at present is estimated at about £'4000 a day, and it was recently calculated that his gifts, so far, amount to He has founded 14,000 libraries and 51 colleges, among other institutions. His daughter will probably be the richest heiress for many generations.

Master Phil. Cooke, son of Mr F. E. Cooke, of Palmerston, and a pupil of the Boys' College, Wanganui, has succeeded in winning one of the three senior scholarships awarded to this school by the Education Board. The lad is only 14 years of age, and has done admirably. Of the two remaining scholarships one was secured by Master Cooke's cousin, Miss Duigan, of Wanganui, who was first on the list. . The Wanganui Education Board is rapidly getting a staff of technical experts in its service, who would do credit to any country. The Agricultural Instructor (Mr Grant), Dairy Instructor (Mr It. Browne?, Woodwork Instructor (Mr Clark), Engineering Instructor (Mr Steele), and Cookery Instructress (Miss Mollison and her assistant) are all facile princeps in their work and have all won degrees in the different branches, while the Carving Instructor (Mr Andrews) is one of the cleverest exponents of the art in the colonv. —Star.

Adjutant Dickens, who has been in command of the Wanganui corps of the Salvation Army for some considerable time, and who is under marching orders for Palmerston North, leaves for his new post next week. During his residence in Wa nganui the Adjutant has done s great deal of useful and charitable work, and there are many who have profited by his kindly help. Wo (Chronicle) have known him to be busy ministering to the sick and suffering or distressed at midnight, and that, too, after a hard day's work, but for most part his labours ol love have been performed with the knowledge only of those who have benefited by them.
