PROTECTION WORKS.

Tine report of the sub-committee of ; the Public Works Committee in reference to the condition of the Hokovvliiti; protection works, which were carried out recently at considerable cost to the Borough, appears in another column. It will be noticed that the works suffered a good deal of damage by the late flood, a washout. aggregating a distance of six chains, having occurred, and that erosion is taking place in vital places. The Engineer has submitted to the Council proposals for the prevention of further damage, and it has been decided to carry out new work on the lines suggested. Judging by the Engineer's report, it is evident that until the willows are firmly established the works will involve the Borough in further expense'in the way of repairs, ami the opinion is expressed that the time is opportune for the formation of a River Board, so as to secure concerted action in all matters appertaining to any works that may become necessary in the future. There is a good deal of wisdom in this suggestion. It will be remembered that the proposition to establish a River Board was debated some considerable time ago, but it was beset with such difficulties then that the Council was compelled to take immediate action in regard to protection works. It is desirable, however, that further attention should be given to the question of establishing a River Board, and the matter could be discussed with profit.
