The Abattoir Site.

A Iftuch Discussed Reservation,

Yesterday afternoon Crs Haydon,. Holben and Armstrong and the Borough Engineer met Messrs Carter and Rawstron npon the proposed abattoir site. The object of the visit, briefly, was to come to a final arrangemont with Messra Carter and Rawstron as to the purchasebf the site.

Reporting to the Cousicil last night Cr Haydon said they had found the vendors prepared to meet the Council in every way except on one point. They insisted' upon keeping a small strip of land on either side of the land, only a foot wide if the Council liked, but they insisted upon it and would not go back upon their desire. Everything else was perfectly satisfactory. As far as the maintenance was concerned they were pre-pared-to keep their own portion, in repair and the Council ■ was to keep its portion. Cr Holben expressed the opinion that the Council would be wrong to tie itself up in the manner desired. Beyond this fact the vendors had met them in every way.'

The Mayor said he could not understand the desire for the one foot reservation. He did not know what they wer& going to do with it;' It seemed to him that the only land affected would be the paddocks adjoining. Such a reservation seemed an extraordinary thing to him' but he did not think the Council shouldallow it to hang up the matter.' •He could not bottom the object and did. nofe think it was necessary to try. . Replying to Gr Holben, the Engineer said the Council would not require any. more land at the abattoir unless they. > were going to provide paddocking for,'; the butchers. The abattoir itself would: not require to be extended until at least there were between 16,000 and 17,000 people in the town.

Reverting to the reservation question, Cr Haydon said that if the Council wanted to increase the width of the section they would be hemmed in by the strip reserved on either side.

, Cr Holben endorsed this view of: the case. He said if the reservation was granted the Council would be entirely in the hands of Messrs Carter and Rawstron.

After further desultory discussion, it was decided, on the motion of Cr Essex, seconded by Cr Goodger, that the Coun-' cil agree to allow Messrs Carter and Rawstron a right-of-way, in common with the Council, half a chain in width through the abattoir Bite, . along the western boundary 'of' the ' said site and in continuation. \ of the Council's road from the Foxton '■' Line, provided the eaateru and westera • boundaries of the abutoir site *re shifted . out bo as to be within two links of the eastern and western boundaries in eaob oase from the cistern r and western , boundaries of Carter arid Rawstroa's^ aectiDD, imo. 15, and febac the Council i» given land at the hone of the abattoir site ia substitution ot such half chain in.
