Wellington Races

First Day.'

(Per Press Association,)

■ WELLINGTON, March SO. The Autumu Meeting of the .Welling. ten Basing Club, which cpsned to-day, was the worst on record in the anDa's of the Club'as regards attendance fields, eport and speculation. What elements contributed to this it is hard to define, beyond the fact that the boisterous weather aff.cted the attendance. Consequently peculation wrs reduced, but why only, 87 horses should have taken part in eight ra^as comprising the programme is hard to explain. Posßibly the i aos of the Club changing its dates and racing before Easter instead of after, as heretofore, may have had something to do with it. Inat year on the first day £8990 went through the totalisators, but to-day only i>6587 was registered, including £870-on the double machine, which paid a dividend of £2Q on Signalman and Boris, the winners of the Thompson and Railway Handicap respectively.
