An old story about the late 3Vlr Vincent Pyke is again in circulation, and is worth repeating. It is as follows : — Vincent Pyke was addressing a hostile section of his electors on the advantage of building the Otago Central railway, which was purposed to iun through some of the roughest country in the South Island. " How are you going to get over the rivers and mountains ?" yelled, one of the audience. " Dam the rivers and blast the mountains 1" shouted Pyke, and the crowd gave him a vote of confidence on. the spot.
