Concert at Jackeytown.

On breaking-up day the Jaclteytown School was filled to overflowing, the occasion being the annual concert. The programme submitted was of a varied character, and was well received by the large and appreciative audience. The schoolroom was very tastefully decorated for the occasion and reflected great credit on Mrs McCully ,to whose hands this function was entrusted. The first part of the programme opened witn an overture very nicely rendered by Miss A. McEwen,an address of welcome was given by Master Geo. Kedshaw, after which the school children sang in character "Massa's in the Cold Ground." Master W. Rowland's laughable " Composition on Animals" was followed by "Ellie Rhee," sung by four of the school girls. Miss Richardson's song "Tatters" was very nicely sung, and received a well-merited encore. The instrumental selections by Mr Kitchen's band were aspecialfeature of the evening's entertainment, and wore greatly appreciated. The school children gave two action pieces, " The Fox Jumped Up," and "Handkerchief Drill,-" both of which were well received. Other items were "In the City of Sighs and Tears," sung by Miss Redshaw; "Croon Baby, Croon," Miss R. Smith ; " If you please, Miss, give me Heayen," Miss Daisy Smith; "Juanita," Misses McEwen and Eagle. Mr Eraser contributed a song which was very finely sung. The following recitations were amongst the items contributed;—"Aßunch of Flowers," school girls : " The Boy Stood on the Burning Roof," Mr McCully ; "Curfew Shall not Ring To-night," Mr- Geo. Richardson ; " Mother's Right Hand," Miss Anne McEwen; "ABoy's Speech," Master Haldane McEwen; " Not Understood," Mr Campbell. The first part of the programme concluded with an exhibition of the Maori poi dance by a number of the school children who were trained by Miss Norah McEwen. This young lady also gave a clever exhibition of the double poi.

After the supper adjournment the " Irish Doctor" was staged, and for nearly an hour the audience was convulsed with laughter. Mr Matheson appeared in the title role, and acquitted himself well in attending to the wants of his patient, Mick Dowd (Mr Stratton). Mr Campbell, as Larry, the doctor's assistant, was all that could be desired, and he was ever ready to diagnose his patients by making an examination of their tongues. "Donald " (Mr McCully) all the way from Glasga', acted his part well as did also the inimitable Smiler (Mr Edwards) and the irate patients Mrs Bull (Mrs Allen) ana Miss Earwig (Miss Eowland). " Tony," with tidings of the doings of " the owd sow," was well impersonated by Master W. Eowland. The accompaniments to the various songs were played by Mrs McCully, Misses A. McEwen, E. McEwen and Messrs Culmsie and Tait. A special word of thanks is due to the ladias who so kindly provided the supper, to Mr Geo. Bichardson for the timber used for the staging, and to Mrs McCully for the use of her piano.

The need of increased accommodation for social functions ia greatly felt and it is hoped that a move will shortly bo made cow»rds meeting this requirement. The proceeds of the concert are.to bs devoted to the purchase of special scienco apparatus ior the school.

Mr A. H. McEwon took charge of the meeting and, nar.de an efficient chairman.
