Himatangi Notes.
(From Our Own Correspondent)
On Friday night, a sixteen-a-side euchre tournament was held in the schoolroom, the married men playing the single men for a dinner. After exciting play, lasting two hours, the former team won by two games. The winning team were comprised of local residents, according to the terms of the match, hut the single men had the assistance of several outsiders, and they deserved their beating for not keeping to the agreement. Mr G.Ewart captained the winners, and Mr I. Lucinsky acted in a like manner for the losers. The" catering was carried ont by Mr Gibbs in his best style, and the good things proved ample for the large crowd present. I hear that the married ladies kept then? hubbies up to the scratch, with remarks such as "Do be careful, George 1" or " Don't renege, Pat f" Mr Henderson, the local railway ganger, had his watch stolen from him a few days back. As usual, that 6inart officer, Constable Foster, proved equal to the task of catching the culprit, and within a few hours ot'the complaint be- i ing made, a man was.arrested in connection with the matter,'and the watch recovered. . i : ;
The oldest resident in the district has it that the late rough weather was the worst in his experience of 28 years, and that there was never so much water about as at the present time. Ploughing operations have been suspended, as the ground is too wet, and the growth in the grass has been retarded, and altogether we are very much behind for this time, of the year.
