.CHEISTCHURCH, October 18. At the Magistrate's Court to-day Dr. Finch, District Health Officer, applied for an order against the local bodies apportioning the cost of providing and maintaining an infectious diseases hospital. The magistrate heard "argument and reserved his decision. The representatives of the local bodies had several conferences with a view to arranging for the distribution of the cost, but always failed to agree.

October 19. The Acclimatisation Society resolved this evening to inquire regarding the possibility of itnporGihg the Australian jackass to Canterbury. A deputation of citizens waited on the Inspector of Telegraphs to-day and asked him to remove the'telegraph poles saidto obstruct the view of the Park and spoil the beauty oftark Terrace. The Inspector replied that hecould not alter tbe existing arrangement owing to the impossibility of placing poles on the other side of the" road. The Mayor telegraphed again to Sir Joseph Ward, staling that the telephone poles were still being erected despite hia wire yesterday. The Beautifying Association considered the matter to-day and decided to send a deputation by to-morrow's boat to interview Sir Joseph and ask for the removal of tbe poles. Members spoke very strongly in condemnation of toe Department's action, and expressed their determation to leave no stone onturned to secure tbe removal of the posto.
