The Daily Mail's Ottawa correspondent states that Captain Low, leader of the Neptune expedition, found five graves on Beechy Island. The inscriptions showed that two were those of Franklin and some of his men. The three others belong.to later expeditions.
[Sir John. Franklin, arctic explorer,made several voyages of exploration in the Northern seas. In 1845 he was appointed to command an expedition consisting of the ships-Erebus and Terror and 134 men,- having for its object. the discovery of the Northwest passage. He was last seen on July'26th; 1845, by a whaler in Melville Bay. --No tidings.of the expediv tion, having reached England, fifteen expeditions were despatched between 1848 and 1854 by England and America, with the object of rescuing the missing explorers. The first traces • were discovered by Omrnonney and Penny in 1850 at Beechey Island, where it was ascertained Franklin had wintered.' 'Many relics of the explorers were subsequently found, and skeletons along the west and south coasts of King William's Land told a terrible tale of disaster. A record found in a cairn brought the story down to April, 1848. Franklin in attempting to reach the coast of Ame- '•; rica, was arrested by heavy ice press- : ing. down from McGlintock ~ then unknown. The explorers had • perished in the attempt.; .:.-';. '-. ;
