MISCELLANEOUS,

A farther letter was received from the Salvage Corps asking for recognition by the Council. It was decided to recognise that body, but it was decided no fire inspector should be appointed. Cr Essex again drew attention to the unsatisfactory state of the sub way in Mam-street, which he said, was always in a flooded state. Last week for two or three days it was absolutely' impassable. Cr Browning endorsed Cr Essex's statements. The engineer said the department had been" written to on the matter, and they were doing their best, but the fact was their machinery was not capable of keeping the subway dry. Cr Armstrong said there must have been faulty workmanship otherwise the cement working would have been impervious to water. The engineer said the water should be drained into the Terrace watercourse. It was decided to. write to the Railway Department pointing out the frequently flooded and impassable state of the subway and asking that the Department should adhere to its agreement with the Council. It was further decided on Cr Essex's motion that the lamp opposite Mr Dowdall's yard in Main-Btreet be removed to the entrance to the Pitt-street subway on the railway side; also that a notice be placed at the enhance stating that the entrance to Pitt-street subway was at that spot. An amendment by Cr Holben that the Railway Department be requested to place a lamp at the approach to the subway in accordance with the existing agreement with the Borough Counoil was lost. It was decided on Cr Goodger's motion that proper street crossings be made between the sub-way. outlet and the footpath in Main-street and that the footpath in Pitt-street, from- Churchstreet to the entrance of the sub-way be formed, kerbed and metalled. Refore the whole of the correspondence was dealt with the standing orders were suspended to'receive tenders for the laying of drain pipes in connection with the sewerage system. Five tenders were received. The business was taken in, committee but a tender was accepted and will be disclosed when the contract is signed.

_ The Council then adjourned till next Tuesday, night.
