Dairy Product Report

;.'-•""■ — The" New Zealand Loam and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, have received the following- report from Messrs Mathie and McWilliam, dated Glasgow, June 23rd, 1904 :— BUTTER. There is a decidedly improved position in all the markets of the United Kingdom, with prices firmer and advancing. This improvement applies more particularly to finest qualities, as lower goods are not participating to the same extent. .Tlie rise of 4 kroner (4s Gd) in Copenhagen' last week had a stimulating effect, and the full advance is readily obtainable for this week's supplies of Danish and Finnish. If the advance is not pressed too fast and too far a good healthy tone should be maintained. Irish creamery butter continues in brisk •demand and supplies are rather under the market' requirements. At the present part of -the season buyers aro inclined to favour this class of butter. Friesland is in fair supply, and arrivals are readily clearod at full rates. Canadian does not yet meet with much attention, but supplies of full grass butter will soon be laro-ely increased, when a better demand will certainly take place. The arrivals of Siberian are not yet large, but choicest lots meet with a ready sale. The demand for New Zealand and Australian is rather quieter in consequence of many buyers now going off these goods altogether for the season and replacing them with; other sorts, and top grades are tho only kind that, move off quickly., The Copenhagen quotation is' cabled this week as " unchang-od." This week's prices :— s s Choicest Danish: • ... 102 to 104 Choicest Finnish ... 94 to 96 Choicest Friesland ... 94 to 96 Irish Creamery ... 94 to 96 Choicest Canadian "... 86 to 91 Choicest New Zealand ... 86 to 90 Choicest Australian ... S4 to 88 Choicest Siberian ... 82 to 86 CHEESE. After the recent spurt in prices there lias been something of a reaction, and the market is again rather sluggish, buyers acting very cautiously and only filling actual requirements. After the disasti-ous manner in'which last season's busi-ness-fiiuahed up in many cases, . this hesitancy is not at all surprising.. "..■ The. make of Home cheese is "lap*© and arrivals coming forward very freely. To-_ay e.i.f. prices for new season s Canadian are 39s Gd to 40s, and an indication that coun-fer offers will be considered, but there is a feeling that prices have still to come lower yet before a safe operating, basis is "reached. . . . . New Zealand, cheese meets -with a quietly steady demand and arrivals are, readily enough .taken-- up as: they come to hand.-.: '. This week's prices :— Finest Home cheddars ... .42 to 46 Finest Home duhlops ... 40 to 44 Finest Canadian1 (old) ... 43 to 44Finest Canadian (new) ... . "41 Finest Canadian (fodder)...' 36 to 38 -inest New. Zealand \ .„ 42 to 43 • CANNED MEATS. ' A rather duller tone characterises the demand for canned 'goods of all descriptions. : This is probably aci counted-for to some 'extent by. the cold, unseasonable:weather we havo been experiencing redontly, but with! the. advent of : 'more, seasonable climatic conditions' a; large- volume of business may be' expected.:: _ The supply of C.C. mutton is still in small compass and current prices are 395-40s per case of 6'a. There is a large supply of American C.C. beef on offer, and, also, a fadr . qirantflity of colionial., Tho prices asking for the former aro! 30s31s, and for tho latter "29_-30s.
