The twelfth annual ball .rf'ilie,Manawatu Mounted Rifles, held st the. Lyceum Theatre last. night, proved an unqualified 'success in every particular. The hall had been! gaily decorated with Hags, flowers and evergreens, and' presented a .picturesque, appearance that was heightened to a degree by the charming costumes worn by many of the ladies present and the military uniforms. The floor -was in excellent condition and the function was most enjoyable, a> fact to which the assiduous attentions of the officers of the company to the pleasure of their guests contributed very materially;.. Included • among, the visitors were :—Major Tatum, in charge of No. 3 Mounted Battalion ; Captain Merriman, Palmerston North, Guards; Captain Jack, 'Cadets;" Lieutenants. . Louisson,-. McMiirray.) RashleigH, a#d Byles; of .'.the' Palmer--ston Rifles, Guards, scad Gaidets, respectively ; Staff Sergeant-Major Dodd, Quartermaster-Sergeant ;Spor--le, 'of the Feilding Mourrted Rifles'; and representatives of each' of the local corps. During,, the evening shooting prizes won during the year were presented as follows :—Challenge Belt, presented by Sergeant Smith to Corporal J. Kehiiard, who also takes Captain-Adjutant- Pring-le's gold medal ; ; Sergeant Smith, gold medal,. presented by Captain Munro ; tliird prize, Sergeant-Major Lloyd." , A special feature ot. the evening wais the_ gift -.to Captain-Adjutant Pringle of a gold .wrist watch • and a silver-mounted oak , tea-tray, the latter suitably inscribed: The presentation was made -' by -Major Tatum, on behalf of the officers and members of the corps, and, in doing-' so, Ire eulogised the services rendered by Captain Pring-le to 'the troop; which dated, since its formation..
