THE FAITHFUL REWARDED.
Dueing a heated discussion in the House last session on the Liquor Bill, Mr T. E. Taylor made the following remarts which are of particular interest at the present time:—" During the last eight weeks a man named Jackson Palmer has been in constant attendance about the precincts of this Chamber. What his business is is absolutely left to conjecture so far.as the public is concerned, but it is common talk in this House that he is here as the legal representative of certain large Auckland brewers, and that if this Bill goes through—and he is here engineering it —we shall have that gentleman added to the Magisterial Bench of this colony by grace of the Eight Hon. tho Premier, at the instigation of Mr Jackson Palmer's employers, the Auckland brewers." Some further remarks were made by Mr Taylor, who predicted that Mr Palmer would be on the Magisterial Bench before another six months expired. Mr Seddon retorted that Mr Taylor's statement was absolutely false, but the latter had evidently got wind of
something. The Government did not appoint Mr Palmer a Stipendiary Magistrate; they waited until a few', days ago when they went one better and made him a Judge of the Native Land Coutt. Mr Palmer, ex-M.H.E. and exlawyer, is fortunate in having obtained a fat billet from the.State,>but why marvel at the appointment. Is it not an established rule of the Seddon administration that the faithful shall be rewarded—at the expense of the people ?
