' We have received from Messrs 'Whilcombe and Tombs, Ltd., a pamphlet "The Climate of Australasia," and a book "Firs': Stndieß in Insect Life in Australasia." The pamphlet is an expansion of the Presidential address delivered to the Geographical section of the Australasian Association for the Advancement of Science by Professor J. W. Gregory, D.Sc, F.R.S., io Dunedin, in January of this year. Prof. Gregory deals with our climate in reference to its' control by the Southern Ocean. After giving fall particulars of the ocean now known by this name, he goes on to explain ooeanic control over climate generally and the laws as to weather : cycle?. He then shows the influence the Southern Ocean has on onr climate, and conoludes with a plea for a united meteorological service for Australasia, in which ocoura the following :—" We spend money freely in defence against hypothetical enemies who may never come; while we stint the Intelligence Department whose duty it is to watch the one foe whose onslaught is cettain and merciless. What could add more to the commercial prosparicy of Australasia than warnings to our vast agricultural and pastoral interests, whether next /jtear our wide fields will bo paralysed by drought or washed by a soil destroying deluge. The dragon of uncertainty that now Iprejs on our agriculturalists could be slain, if we had fore-knowledge of approaching seasons of fair weather ard of foul. That knowledge is available if we seek it properly." " First Studios in .
