Palmerston High School.

Board of Governors.'

Tho first meeting of the Palmerston North High School Board of Governors was held at tho Council Chambers at-mid-day to-day. There were present Messrs W. T. Wood, M.H.R., W. H. Collingwood, Barnicoat, F. PJrani, W* Park, the Rev. I. J o »y, Hirach, ahd Yernon. Mr W. Montgomery cconpied - thochair pendieg the election of'a chairman, having been appointed presiding officer by the Government. In proposing Mr W. T. Wood as chairman, Mr Jjarhicoat; referred to the vary greao interest Mr Wood had taken in education during the many years he had been chairman of the Campbell-street v'chool Committee, a member or tho Wanganui Education Board, and also In connection with the Technical School and District High School. He had c-.ken a prominent part in collecting the £200 which waa practically the inception of the present High School. Mr W. Park seconded the proposition md endorsed the remarks and expressions of opinion o£ Mr Barnicoat.

There was no further nomination and Mr Wood was declared duly elected and took tke chair. Mr Wood duly returned thanks for his election. Ha dwelt upon the various steps taken in connection with the'institution of the Technical and District High Schools, the grant by the Borough Council of the site of the "present High School, and generally the steps that baa btenjaken by several residents in the interests of education in the town. A. vote of thanks uS3 accorded Mr Montgomery for presiding at th& meeting. . Mr G. Hirsch was elected secretary pvo tern. The order of retirement, three members each year, was drawn by ballot and resulted in the Eev C. C. Harper .and Messrs Barnicoat and Collingwood '■'■tiring the first year, and Messrs Eutherturd, Park and Hirsch, the remaining three, remain in office till the end of the term. The Eev C. C. Harper, and Messrs .Barnicoat and Collingwood remain in*office till Dec. 1905. The Eev. C. C. Harper was granted leave of absence. It was decided to meet on the second. Saturday of the month at 4 p.m. A letter was read from the Education Board pointing out that the Technical School would be vested in the Board of Governors and asking that a committee be appointed to confer.with a committee from the Board relative to taking over the buildings. Mr Pirani said that it was desirable the Governors should take over the school. They would get exactly the same subsidy from the Government as the Education Board and jbe dealt with in every way the same as the latter. ! It was decided on Mr Collingwood's motion that it was desirable to take over the school, and the Chairman, the Rev. I. Jolly nnd Mr Hirsch were appointed a committee to act re the Technical School buildings.Mr Gollingwood was appointed treasurer, and he,-with the chairman, will | sign cheques. | The staff of the District High School were appointed to the High School; the i question of. their Balaries will be considered later. The personnel of the teaching staff remains the same. It wbb deoided the fee for pupils should be £8 per quarter; if paid before the third week after becoming due, .£2 10s per quarter. The present caretaker will be retained at a salary of £2 per week. On Mr Pirani's suggestion the chairman will interview the Secretary of Education to arrange an advance on the quarterly allowance for salaries. The metting then adjourned till 7.80 to-nighs. -<
