The Labour Policy Criticised
• Received May 20, 10.42 a.m. . MELBOURNE, May 20. The Senate passed- a motion affirming that the iron works should be owned by the Government. The...-House appointed a Select Committee to enquire into d means for providing old age pensions by the establishment of a Government tobacco monopoly. [Mr Deakin, in a speech, and in dealing with Mr Watson's policy, said tho Labour organisation was so exclusive that it did not .take -into •cognisance' anything outside of its bounds. It 'had fought those, that agreed with it, but had not quite entered its fold ; it had /ought those diametrically opposed to Tit, but was bound to admit . that the fiercest fights had been between the Labour men and the men most closely associated with it in political principle. Unless the Labour Party was prepared to throw open its doors and accept the general burdens and responsibility it must see that there was not a hope for it of retaining the place it had, by a mere chance of majorities in tho chamber, received.
Received May 20, 11 a.m. MELBOURNE, May 20. jtfr Reid will submit the proposals made by the Deakin caucus to the Freetrade Party to-day. Mr Reid points out that what the Deakinites' caucus asks for is the rule; of its majority in the proposed coalition.
