Presentation to Sergt. Miers.

(From our own Correspondent.) ASHHUEST, Thursday. A most enjoyable social was given by tho Ashhurst Rifles last evening, being the presenting of the "liorimcr" Cup to Sergt. Micro, the winner o£ the matches fired to decide the best marksman. The win was a very popular one, as it was on scratch. The cup was presented by Mrs Lomner, who iv a few well-chosen words, expressed her pleasure, and her hope that the corps would long exist and that th o cup would be tho means or bringing out some really good shots, to which Sergt. Miers suitably responded. I Captain Andrew, on behalf of the ! corps, sincerely thanked Mr and ■Mrs Lorinier for the cup, and for their interest in volunteering generally. He had pleasure in announcing that the Uovivnmant u.-jjta- , tion of £117 10s, and an additional sum of £4 for sundries, was now ;at tho Bank to the credit of the corps, and he estimated that after the uniforms were paid for there would still be a handsome amount on the right side of the ledger. Referring to the question of the handsome cup just presented, this has to be won twice in succession or three times in all to become the property of tho winner, and he (tho captain) thought it would be an excellent idea to obtain medals to be presented to the winners, so that ire case of the present or any future holder not winning it the de- . sired number of times he would still have a memento of his success. Ho thought he knew of a couple of gentlemen who would present medals. I In all there were some fifty volunteers and civilians present, Lieut. Grammer in the chair, and tho following toasts were duly honoured : —" The King,". " Serg Miers " by Lieut. G rammer ; "The Ashhurst ' Rifles," by Mr J. IT. Vincent, responded to by Capt. Andrew, Lieut. Grammer and Lieut. Bowater and Sergts. Wilson and Miers ; "'The - Donors of the Cup," "Our Host and Hostess" (Mr and Mrs 2 rrimer) by Lieutenant Bowar.or and responded to by Mr Lorinier.
