Unknown Vessel.

Tho Samuel Plimsoll,

(Per Press Association.)

_. Gisbobne, Wednesday. Tho unknown vessel in tow of the Omapore arrived here at 8.30 and is believed to be the Samuel Plimsoll. Later. The disabled vessel proves to he the barque Samuel Plimsoll, bound from Glasgow with a general cargo for that port, and Auckland. She was picked up by tho Omapere at 7.30 last evening off Portland Island, and towed to Gisborne. Captain Jaffray and the officers of the vessel report having had a very severe experience during the past fortnight She left Glasgow on June 18, and passed Nugget's Point Light after a passage of 91 days. .Then it came on to blow heavily from the south-west, and the barometer was extremely low. Tho vessel was hove to in the storm for three days, rolling terribly and with seas breaking over At breakfast time on Friday week a heavy squall came on and the vessel rolling heavily, tho main and mizeu masts fell over the port side with a tremendous crash. Fortunately no one was hurt. It was with great difficulty the wreckage was cut away, and the ship aU that day was at the mercy of the seas. A considerable quantity of water found its way below, and it is believed, the cargo in tho main hold is damaged. The vessel was then driven north, and all the hands had a most anxious time since with little sleep, and are quite played out. They wero frequently at the pumps, there being now eleven and a half inches of water m the main hold. The foremast was very shaky, and had to be staked up with fresh gear. ' The decks were continually, full of water, and two boats wero smashed by falling masts. The ship, was driven north as far Gable End, the foreland off which she has been the last two days, , It is, fortunate the Omapere secured her as the wind-was blowing heavily from the shore to-day and would have driven her out to sea. A" singular coincidence is that the Samuel Plimsoll was engaged,to load wool at Gisborno after the discharge of her Home cargo. La.e-t.ll Tho. movements-of the Samuel Plimsoll are not expected to be decided .till to-morrow, but probably she will ho towed to Auckland by the Omapere. Captain JafEray is in communication with his owners.: , :
