A sens_tion_l incident happened at the ford at-tho Rangitikei River last ovoning, by which Messrs J. Flanagan and Con. McGregor nearly lost thoir lives. It ap-. pears that these two gentlemen wero driving home from iho Bulls races in a gig drawn by a horss, and when about the centre of tho stream tho animal from some unaoooumable cause lay down.and could not bs induced to -be. Tho result was that tho current swopt the horse and the conveyance down stream, and when they wero carried into deep water, and Mr Flanagan saw that the horso could not recover itself, ho told his companion co jump out and swim for the bank. This ho did successfully, but Mr Flanagan still stuck to ihe trap, and was carried on for some considerable distance, when the vehicle was overturned and threw him into tho water. He then struck out for'tho shore, which he reached after swimming a distance of about 200 yards. The horse and trap still continued to drift down stream until it was secured about threequarters of a mile below the ford, where it was anchored to tho bank by a stout rope. Both Messrs Flanagan and McGreg-.r lost "their overcoats, which were in tbo gig at tho time, but beyond a thorough wetting they suffered no personal injury from their adventure. Tho accident was witnessed by several gentlemen who wero returning to -aimerston, and who rendered every _ssistaueo in their power. __________
