MONDAY, SEPT. 14, 1902. A GROSS INJUSTICE.
AND POHANGINA GAZETTE. Circulation, 2,800 Copies Daily
Tim gross injustice infliotod on Mr Haselden, the member for Patea, by casting him in costs and upsetting his election, because a Eegistration officer spelt a name on the roll "Williams, in stead of Williamson, bore fruit during the discussion on tho Electoral Bill in the House of Representatives on Friday night, for a clausn was carried against he Government, by a largo majority, enacting that in such cases the innocent party should not be compelled to pay costs. At the same time, tho decision of tho two Judges of tho Supreme Court was ridiculous, especially in view of the result ot tho second eleotion, when Mr Haselden was returned by a large majority. To our mind, there is nothing more despicable than an election petition on purely technical grounds, and while it is certainly exasperating to bo beaten in a contest for a seat in the House of Representatives, it should not be permissible for the political tool of a Premier to lodgo a petition against the return of a candidate, unless a gross violation of both tho letter and the spirit of our electoral laws has been committed. </
