Manawatu Company's Railway.

Deputation to tbe Milliliter.

A large and influential deputation waited on tho Minister for Railways this morning in reference to the Manawatu Railway. Bosides the roprosontatives of Chambers' of Commerce and Local Bodies, Sir William Russell, A. B. Atkinson, F. H. Huscldeu. K. M. Smith, W. H. Field and F. Pirani, M.s'H.B. wero present. A numbor of members of the deputation stated their views at length and Sir Joseph Ward replied to tho effect that the Government did not intend to sever tho connection at Longburn or compel tho -passengers and goods to •hango trains there. The reason for taking land at Longburn was thai certain works wero necessary for the development of the traffic and it was intended to do a portion at Longburn and a portion at Palmorston, **ut such a high price was asked by a owner of land at the former place that it was a question whether the work would bo gone on with. Notico was i*iven to the Manawatu Company of the termination of tho existiug agreement, with the object of having a different arrangement to that at present, particularly in the direction of allowing tho running rights for Government trains over the Manawatu line in a similar manner to that practised at Home, with the object of running moro frequent trains between Palmerston and Wellington. He gave his defi nito assurauco that the interests of the users of tho railway would bo conserved and no injury douo to anyone. The mombers of tho deputation are very pleased at tho rosult.
