MANAWATU EVENING STANDARD AND POHANGINA GAZETTE. GUARANTEED LARGEST CIRCULATION IN THE DISTRICT MONDAY, JANUARY 6, 1902. VOLUNTEER GRIEVANCES.
Tin; Auckland Herald puts a very different complexion on the version given by the Premier of the grievances of the Auckland Aroluntccrs with reference to payment in connection with the Royal reception—grievances which are shared l>y men from this district. It will lie remembered that the Premier stated that some of the Aucklanders claimed 7k a day, but he forgot to explain that these men—comprising about a dozenacted as baggage guard for the Duke find Duchess of York and suite, and had very hard work conveying the baggage from place to place, while the Government Volunteer ollicers m Auckland recognised the claim as a fair one. And we should think so, considering hands were engaged by the Government to wash-up dishes at Tc Koraha, Christchurch, at £"1 ii day. The Premier also said that £50 would , satisfy all the claims, whereas the total of the Auckland claims alone is nearer £900. Objection is also made to the claim of 4s a day while travelling by steamer, but the Herald points out that the iirst circular issued by the Defence Department stated that all Volunteers attendiDg the Itoyal receptions would bo paid ■Is a day from the time of. leaving headquarters to (lie time of returning. Certainly a circular was issued a month after the Itoyal visitors left, which stated that is a day would be paid only to those who travelled over 100 niiies by rail to Cliristchurch,.but such a system of playing fast and loose with those concerned does not comineiid itself to honest folk.
