A LIBEL ACTION.
The evidence 'given in the Brisbane Observer libel case, in which £500 damages, were awarded, does not bear the same construction as the cablegrams received by'us during the trial; which made Lieut.-Colonel Eieardo appear in -the'light of anything but a courageous soldier. The words attributed to! the ■ plaintifl: :when # getting through a fence, while under fire were not used by him. Lieut; Whitehorn, a returned New Zealander, made a statutory declaration, giving an account /of- the Dronfield aetion,and recounting how.,one of the ambulance bearers was well iipin the -firing line, and while getting through a barbed wire fence, he got caught, and: could not extricate himself. ..Finding himself in this awkward and.dangerous position he called out to his comrades, '" For God's sake,' come and help me, or ' I shall be shot," or words to that effect. These words were afterwards attributed to Eieardo, but; there was no truth in tho statement that lie. used ihem. Lieutenant.; Whitehorh .also stated that he nerer. saw Lieut.-Colonel. .Eieardo behave in any bur, an exemplary •' manner, while they were receiving the ;«Qmplimen!ts:of..therenemy^y; w;;;' ;■:; v.
