GUAEANTEED LAEGEST CIBCULATION IN THE DISTRICT.
Taken, as a whole, last week's experiences in Palmerston North mark a great step in advance in the economical conditions of the class to whom the colony must look, for permanent prosperity, v^z., those who are engaged in the work of primary production. For we have seen a technical exhibition of the best machinery to be obtained for the development of the producing power of the 'land, we have, heard papers read and subjects discussed of particular interest to farmers by men specially fitted to impart up-to-date information of a valuable kind, and we have seen the successful consummation of an intelligent movement designed to consolidate the individual farmers into an association enabling them to speak with one voice on the many drawbacks and difficulties associated with their calling. All these questions have-been approached from a utilitarian point of view, and the best evidence of the manner in which tliey have been handled, is the very satisfactory results'already achieved, At the public meeting on. Saturday, the truest note sounded was that of Mr Massey, the member for Franklin, a farmer himself who. urged that while it was legitimate and necessary for the farmers 6£ "the pommunity to see that their interests were conserved by the powers that be, nothing could be gained unless they possessed energy, self-reliance and a determination to help themselveswhenever the opportunity presented itself. We believe that, with those conditions observed, and a healthy and active interest taken in the actions o^ our Parliamentary representatives, yery much can be done to further the pros, perity of the colony, and to lighten the lot of the. largest body of producers existing in the colony.
