Stock Returns.
The interim return of sheep m the colony at April. 30th last shows : —Auckland—Number of sheep, 1900, 880,189; 1901, 887,938; increase, 7,749. Napier, 4,620,745 and 4,533,----213 ; decrease, 89,527. Wellington and West Coast, 4,497,239 aud 4,790,368; increase, 293,127. Marlborough and Nelson, 894,010 and 925,381; increase, 31, £71. Canterbury aud Kaikoura, 4,716,262 and 5,107,073; increase, 390,811. Otago, 3,746,750 and 3,942,806; increase, 176,056. T0ta15—1900,19,355,195 ; 1601, 20,186,784 ; increase, 919,116 —increase North Island, 213,351; increase South Island, 618,238. Total increase, 831,589. The decrease in Napier is due to an alteration in "the boundaries of the Napier and Wellington districts. ■ The return of stock slaughtered and compensation paid during last year under the Amending Stock Act' of 1898 shows—l horse, 2960 cattle, 634 swine; compensation paid on full'value £95, on half do., £4897;' total, £4902. Sum received in respect to the disposal of carcases, £907, of which £52 was deducted from compensation, and £854 paid into tho public account.
