PATEA ELECTION.

The result of the official scrutiny of the votes recorded for the Patea election turned the tables on Mr Heslop, the Government candidate, and put Mr Hasel-, den top of the poll by one vote. An almost similar thing occurred at Eiccarton last election, when Mr Bolleston headed Mr Bussell.by 6 votes. The latter demanded/a scrutiny and the recount proved that he had received one vote more than Mr Kolleston and he was,, therefore, duly eleoted for the seat. Attempts will be made to upset the Patea election, owing to the polling booth at Makiriki not being open on the day of the poll and that canvassing was alleged to have been indulged in by some of the candidates during the campaign. At all events, it must be admitted.. that an extraordinary bungle has been madeby the returning officer in not having a booth open at Makiriki, a" town where the electors are mostly' against the Government.
