MANAWATU EVENING STANDARD AND POHANGINA GAZETTE.

TUESDAY, JUNE 11, 1901. THE HOLIDAY QUESTION.

JUABANTEED LARGEST CIBCULATION IN THE DISTEICT.

The number of holidays which merchants, shopkeepers and others have given their employees the past nine months is beginning to be felt, and on all sides " growling " at the frequency of holidays has commenced in earnest. " All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy," is a very true old saw, but on the other hand employees get sufficient off-time to induce them to feel that to work at all is a positive nuisance. The Mercantile Gazette, writing on this head, observes:—" The tendency to multiply holidays and to bring about the frequent closing of shops, is one.of the evils of the present day. Upon the slightest excuse pressure is put upon the retailers to close. The shop assistants aiethe prime agHators moving underneath to bring about the result. We think it would be a very good thing if they in some way had to share with their employers the losses made by the too frequent interruption of business. Certain fixed holidays should be given without deduction of pay, but for all days the shops are closed, outside those forced by statute, no wages should be paid. "We are inclined to think that holidays would then be less frequently asked for than they are at present. In the mechanical trades, where pay is deducted, the employees are complaining that holidays are too frequent, and blame the same

people."
