Two writers in French newspapers have been sentenced to 4£ years and a month's imprisonment respectively in addition to boing mulcted in damages for libolling Colonol Picquart, who is well known in connection with the Droyfus case. Henry, of the 45th Sikhs, was killed on Tuesday in a brush with the lilnlunud raiders near Zandola, on the Indian frontier. BILLIARD MATCH. Melbourne, October 26. The Roberts-Woiss billiard match has reached an interesting stago, Roberts being within 276 of his points. The scorers at tho conclusion of play last night were Weiss 20,131; Roberts 19,420. Weiss's best break was 103 and Roberts 149. Sydney, Octobor 26. With his scoro at 20.984, Weiss tonight ran out a winner with an unfinished break of sixteen. Roberts's score stood at 20,110. FREE EDUCATION. Hobart, October 26. A Bill has passod tho Legislative Assembly affirming the principle of free education being given to children in tho colony. A FATAL QUARREL. Melbourne, October 28. . A man named William Wright, a financior, residing at Carlton, quarrelled with his wile to-day, and the latter shot him with a revolver twice in the breast. Wright's condition is hopeless. In his depositions ho admitted having aggrayatod his wife. DALGETY & CO. London, October 20. The balance-sheet of Dalgoty and Co., Limited, shows a profit of £116,062. Payment of a dividond of 8 por cent, is recommended by the directors, leaving £36,062 to carry forward. A FRIEND. Count de Richtohofen, who has succeeded Baron yon Bulow as Minister for Foreign Affairs in Germany, is friendly to Great Britain. SIPIDO. French detectives are trying to execute a warrant for the arrest of tho young anarchist, Sipido, who recently shot at the Prince of Wales at Brussels. OBITUARY—SIMS REEVES. London, October 26. Obituary—Mr Sims Reeves, aged 78 j years. During nearly the whole of his long life Mr Sims Reeves, certainly the most popular tenor with English audiences of the centuary, had been beforo the public as a singer. I PACIFIC CABLE. Sydney, October 26. The Pacific Cable Bill has passed the Legislative Assembly. THE CRUISE OF THE TORCH. Melbourne, October 25. H.M.S. Torch arrived here to-day from the Solomon Islands. During her cruise she hoisted the British flag an tho following islands, acquired by Great Britain under the Samoan agreement:— Ysabel, Gower, Lord Howe, Tasman Group, Fauro, Shortland and Choiseul. Mr Woodford, Commissioner of the Solomon Islands, read a proclamation annexing the islands, and the British flag was saluted. At Lord Howe the Torch scraped a coral reef, but only slightly damaged her keel. At Guadalcanar an effort was made to redress the burning of a Roman Catholic missionary, butthe chief who had committed the deed hid himself.. Mr Woodford burnt a few huts, and left the Protestant missionary a supply of arms and ammunition, as the chief had informed the latter that the murder of tbe Catholic priest was only the forerunner of the intended wiping out of every mission.
