MANAWATU EVENING STANDARD AND POHANGINA GAZETTE. GUARANTEED LARGEST CIRCULATION IN THE DISTRICT. FRIDAY, MAY 18, 1900. REPLACING SCHOOLS.

It will be interesting to notice what the Government will do towards replacing the Thorndon School recently destroyed by fire and valued at £4000. It will be remembered that when the Feilding School was burned, the Government* with that paltry parsimony usually exhibited towards some localities, and only equalled by the magnificent generosity shown when a district like Mr Hogg's is concerned, refused to pay the whole cost of reinstating the building, and the Board had to pay -£500 out of its building fund towards the work. It is considered in Wellington that a brick building must be erected to replace the Thorndon School, at which some f>oo pupils attended, or nearly the same number as Feilding has. If that course is pursued, and the whole cost is found by the Government, then the Wanganui Board—which found for £1900 the necessary accommodation and furniture for which some £6000 will be required in Wellington—can very fairly ask Parliament to do what the Government declines, make up the difference between the Government grant for reinstatement and the actual cost to the Board.
