Timaru, May 15. The Charitable Aid Board has decided to enquire what are the legal powers of control over children "boarded out to enable them to discharge their annual responsibilities when payments have ceased at the age of 14.

Dunedin, May 15. At Kaitangata to-day James Hill was brought before Messrs Mackenzie and xoole, J. sP on a charge of causing the death of John Thomson on the sth inst. £1 i* F\i M# *Vaser Prosecuted on behalf of the Crown, and Mr Neil i aterson defended. Hill and Thompson had been fighting, and it appeared that at one stage, when both Hill and Thomson were on the ground, others were on top of them. After hearing the evidence the Bench dismissed the case.

Applications were received to-day for sections in-the Burnego estate, near Balclutha, acquired by the Government under the Lands for Settlement Act. The 7154 acres were subdivided into twenty-three farms, and seventy-four applications have been received, covering all sections. The average annual rental is 4s per acre. Stratford, May, 15. The Governor arrived in Stratford on Monday evening, and was met by the Mayor. This morning he visited the State School, Catholic School, dairy factory and bacon factory, expressing himself highly pleased with what he saw. Lord Eanfurly accepted an invitation to lunch at the Mayor's residence, the member for the district and his Excellency's Aide-decamp being the only other guests. This afternoon the party visited several other points of interest, and proceeded to New Plymouth to catch a steamer for Auckland.

A curious case occupied the Court today. A young man was brought up on remand, having been arrested at Inglewood on a charge of stealing a silver cornet, the property of Mr War ren, a well-known architect at Stratford. On the case being called, Mr Weston, accused's solicitor, said the case had been withdrawn, his client having accepted an apology and a cheque for to cover his costs. Mr Warren's solicitor said the information had been laid under a misapprehension. His client withdrew and apologised for the same. The Magistrate said the prosecutor had acted in a hot-headed, rash manner. The apology was handsome, but only what the accused, who would leave the Court without a stain on his character, was entitled to.

Cheistchurch, May 15. The North Canterbury Farmers' Cooperative Association has secured the barque Lake Erie to load produce for South Africa. It is understood that an Ashburton firm has secured a steamer to take produce to a similar destination.

Mr Anderson, mate of the schooner Annie Hill, reports that last Thursday night, about quarter past ten, when the schooner was about sixteen miles E.N.E. of Chasland's Mistake, ho sighted a small vessel bottom upwards, lhe schooner was running before a strong south-east wind, with her square sail set, at the time, and as the night was dark and rainy, it was impossible to examine the delerict. Mr Anderson thinks it was probably the missing schooner Wolverine.

There was a large gathering at Hororata yesterday to attend the funeral of the) late Lady Hall, all pans of the district being represented.
