From which it appears^-f our boys fought gallantly, while thos£i-ff captured could not possibly have -pre^. vented their fate, as they were riding in some wagons and were unarmed whenthe Boers completely surrounded them." % The New Zealanders who were mounted, "-. covered the retreat of the force, who escaped in gallant and masterly style, displaying coolness and courage. Amongst the New Zealanders who escaped on foot from the wagons after being captured, by the Boers were Seigeant Pitt and. Troopers Joyce, Peebles,.-, Bowie, McCauley and Boucher. ' -v ; •
